What is a key code?
Most locks are built to a specific pattern of cuts, and that pattern can be described by a key code. For many vehicles the code can be looked up from the VIN through authorized locksmith databases. For many house and mailbox locks, the code is stamped on the lock or recorded with the original paperwork. With the code and the right key blank, a code-cutting machine produces a key cut to factory specifications, not a worn-down tracing of another key.
When key cutting by code helps
- All car keys lost. We cut a key from the vehicle’s code and then program any chip or remote, part of our car key replacement service.
- Only key lost for a house lock or mailbox lock where you’d rather keep the lock than replace it.
- Keys too worn to work reliably. Cutting by code restores the original factory depths instead of reproducing the wear.
- Broken keys. When the pieces aren’t usable, we cut by code after extracting the broken piece.
What this service is not
We’re a mobile locksmith, not a walk-in key counter. Code cutting is how we replace keys you’ve lost or that no longer work, usually as part of a service call at your home, business or vehicle.
Proof of ownership
Because a key code opens a lock without any existing key, we verify ownership before cutting: ID plus vehicle registration or title for cars, and reasonable proof that you own or manage the property for buildings. That protects you, too.
If we can’t find the code
When no code is available, we can usually decode the lock itself or read the cuts from the cylinder, then cut a key to match. If it makes more sense, we can rekey the lock to a new key instead.
