Our story
Terry has been working as a locksmith since 1989. In 2001 he started The Lock Doctor to serve Charlottesville and the surrounding counties, and it has been a family business ever since. Today Terry’s son, Kyle, runs The Lock Doctor day to day. When you call (434) 297-3223, Kyle is usually the one who answers, and he runs the calls.
That’s the whole idea behind the business: when you’re locked out or your car key is gone, you should be able to reach a real local locksmith, get a straight answer and a quote, and have someone show up who knows what they’re doing.
Mobile by design
We don’t have a storefront. Our van is set up with the tools and equipment to open locks, rekey and repair them, install new hardware, and cut and program car keys on-site. That’s why we can make a car key in your driveway instead of having your car towed to a dealer, and why a lockout in Crozet or Louisa gets the same service as one in downtown Charlottesville.
What we do
We’re a full-service locksmith for homes, businesses and vehicles: lockouts, rekeying, lock repair and installation, deadbolts, smart locks, master key systems, car key replacement, fob and transponder programming and key cutting by code.
Licensed in Virginia
Virginia requires locksmiths to be licensed through the Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS). The Lock Doctor is a Virginia DCJS Licensed Locksmith #11-30826. Before you let any locksmith work on your home or car, ask for their license number. A legitimate locksmith will give it to you without hesitation.
Our hours
Monday through Saturday we’re open 24 hours. On Sunday we’re available from noon to midnight.

We cover about a 50-mile radius around Charlottesville: the cities of Charlottesville, Waynesboro and Staunton, and Albemarle, Greene, Fluvanna, Louisa, Orange, Madison, Nelson, Buckingham, Augusta, Rockingham, Culpeper, Goochland, Amherst, Page, Rappahannock, Cumberland and Spotsylvania counties.
